The Adventures of M&M: Christmas Tree Hunting

IMG_5759Fa la la la la, la la la CHRISTMAS.

This past weekend Mike and I went Christmas tree hunting with our pals Liz and Dave. We jingled all the way to Grafton, MA to pick out the most perfect Christmas trees at Highfield’s Farm, and throughout the course of the day, no less than four Christmas miracles occurred.

IMG_5751Christmas Miracle Number One: When L&D picked us up in the morning, it was rainy and gray and I was being a Debbie Downer because I believe that you CAN’T chop down a Christmas tree in the rain. This is Christmas Law #2, closely related to my other irrational belief that it’s not Christmas if there isn’t snow on the ground (you know you grew up in upstate NY when…) But somehow, miracle of miracles, as we pulled into the Christmas tree farm it started snowing huge, fat, fluffy, stick-to-the-ground flakes. Walkin’ in a winter wonderlaaaand…!

IMG_5750Christmas Miracle Number Two: Mike and I found a tree we agreed on.

(You should know that growing up, my family got a normal 6 1/2 foot tree and Mike’s family got a monster 11 foot tree. So we settled on [what appeared to be] 8 feet.)

Christmas Miracle Number Three: Let’s do some math here: one car, two trees, four people, seventy five feet of rope, zero roof rack. How did we expect to get these trees home, you ask??? Brains and brawn, people. Brains and brawn.

While Liz and I scurried away to the farm’s cute little log cabin to get some hot cider, Mike and Dave worked on tying down the trees. When we returned to the car they had successfully tied one tree to the roof. We all high-fived and moved on to the second tree only to realize….our genius men had tied half the doors shut.

At least the tree was secure?

We managed to attach the second tree (using the “wrap the entire car in rope” approach), and headed on our merry way. While driving back through Boston we were so delighted that people were pointing at our car and smiling; we thought we were spreading so much Christmas joy!

And then we pulled into the driveway. And the trees were precariously perched DIAGONALLY across the car.

But we still had both, AND they didn’t fall off while we sped down I-90! Fa la la la la, la la la…miracle.

IMG_5760Christmas Miracle Number Four: After praising Santa and his reindeer for helping our trees miraculously make it home, Mike and I hopped in our elevator with the cute and perfectly-apartment-sized tree.

And then we brought it into our apartment. And it was two feet too tall. And four feet too wide.

(Dear landlord, please don’t check our ceiling for tree sap scratches. And if you do…sooowwwwwyyyy.)

Though buying a saw to chop two feet off of the bottom of the tree inside our apartment can hardly be considered a Christmas miracle, the fact that we managed to rearrange our living room furniture to fit a two-sizes-too-big tree certainly is.

Chewy Chocolate Peppermint Cookies

chocopeppermint.jpgA few weeks ago, I freaked out over these peppermint bark baking bits from Trader Joe’s (new vlog coming soon!!) and immediately invented a cookie recipe to shove them in. I’ve now made these cookies 18 (okay, 3) times in the past couple weeks and I can’t. get. enough. They taste like brownie batter with the slightest hint of peppermint and are dangerously addictive.

chocopeppermint4.jpgI made the mistake of bringing the entire first batch of cookies into work, leaving only one cookie for Mike to try, which officially makes me the meanest - I KNOW. So, the other night, we’re finishing up dinner and Mike has dropped roughly 1,000 hints about how much he would just looooove a chewy chocolate cookie and it’s toooo bad all the cookies ended up in someone ELSE’S belly, and I decide to redeem myself by whipping up another batch. At this point it’s 9PM and my bedtime is rapidly approaching, so I’m trying to make these cookies AFAP (as fast as possible. invented for the sake of this story), speeding around the kitchen like a Tazmanian devil. While the butter and sugar are spinning around inside the mixing bowl getting fluffy, I fling open the cabinet to grab the flour like a whirling dervish - thereby knocking the metal lid of my flour canister INTO THE MIXER WHICH IS ON. HIGH.

COOKIE DOUGH EXPLOSION. MELANIE CRYING. THE SOUND OF METAL SCRAPING METAL (a sound one hopes to never hear whilst BAKING). HELP. HELP. HELP.

If you have ever wondered what a cookie crime scene might look like, just imagine this:

Dough splattered onto every surface of your kitchen. Cocoa powder (which is im.poss.i.ble. to clean) sprayed across the counters and floor. Flour in your hair, eyes, and life.

chocopeppermint5.jpgAfter screaming for five seconds I had the clarity of mind to TURN OFF the mixer before it died a sad and messy death. Somehow I managed to salvage the few scoops of dough left at the bottom of the bowl to bake up a couple cookies, and all was well in the MJM household.

chocopeppermint2.jpg

The moral of the story? Make these delicious cookies, but don’t try to do it AFAP.

Chewy Chocolate Peppermint Cookies

yield: about 4 dozen cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs + 2 egg yolks
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups peppermint bark baking bits (if you can’t find the bits, you could use a combo of chocolate chips and candy cane pieces)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, beat butter and sugars on medium-high until fluffy, about 1 minute. Add vanilla, then scrape down the sides of the bowl and add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Scrape down the sides to incorporate ingredients as needed.
  2. In a separate bowl, add flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk to combine. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and stir on low speed until combined. Add the baking bits; stir until incorporated.
  3. Drop dough by rounded tablespoons onto a baking sheet. Bake for 8 minutes - do not over bake, or the cookies will be crispy instead of chewy! Allow to cool on a wire rack.

Thanksgiving Weekend

Hi friends! I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving. I was home in upstate NY for a few days - here are some pictures from my turkey-pie-family-filled weekend!

I. Am. Moving. Into. This. Kitchen. BE MIIIIIIINE.

My brother looks like a hoodlum and my dad is being “MomDad the Two-Headed Parent”. Can’t take us anywhere.

Fa la la la la, la la la la! Christmas season is here!!

Bring on the Christmas cookies!

Doughnut Plant, NYC

OH MY GOD THESE DOUGHNUTS I’M GOING TO DIE I DIED I’M DEAD.

*Warning: If you aren’t a fan of the times when I freak out unnecessarily over food, you should totes skip this post.*

Let me tell you how these most amazing doughnuts came into my life.

Mike was in NYC this past weekend, and I sent him a text that said a little something like this:

“Hey there one-that-I-love-oh-so-much, if you happened to be near Doughnut Plant and you wanted to buy some doughnuts for me, I wouldn’t be mad. I’ve heard their doughnuts are MAD GOOD and like, if you chose to spend your 24 hours in NYC buying me food instead of hanging with your bros, that would be okay with me. And if, by chance, you found yourself at said doughnut place, here’s the list of items I want. No pressure.

He followed up a few hours later with some texts that sounded a little something like this:

“Oh, did you want me to go to Doughnut Plant? Because the broseph that I’m staying with just so happens to live around the corner from it.

And oh, do you love french bulldogs? Because I just so happened to stumble upon a litter of french bulldog puppies on my way to get doughnuts.

And, OH….were you wondering what 30 dollars worth of doughnuts looks like??

*Doughnut box photo*

Now you know.

And then he returned home toting THIS.

YO Mike! Even though you somehow experienced my BEST DAY EVER without me, you da bessstt.

Here’s what we got…

I took one bite of the pumpkin and I fell into some sort of doughnut trance where I could only rock myself back and forth and murmur things like “Fluuuuffy. Cozy. Pumpkiiiin. Warmth. So cooozzzyyy. Fluffyyy.”

Listen, I am ACTUALLY. DROOLING. just thinking about it.

And then.

I was putting off eating this crumbly one because I thought it was coated in cinnamon sugar and was like, whatevs, I have chocolate and glaze and cream filling to focus on. But obv I needed to make the rounds, so I took a bite and had the best realization of all realizations that one could ever realize [surrounding doughnuts].

THE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE DOUGHNUT IS DIPPED IN CHOCOLATE GLAZE

AND THEN IT IS COATED IN COOKIE CRUMBS.

Go to Doughnut Plant. And take me with you.

The end.

Cosmetic Bags by emme purses

When I was home a few weekends ago, I discovered that my mom had transformed my childhood bedroom into her sewing room. Bye bye, N*Sync posters! See ya later, high school prom photo collages. Good riddance, closet full of clothes that haven’t fit me since I was 14.

I started to shed a tear BUT THEN… I opened my dresser to find a drawer full of these teensy adorable cosmetic bags. And I said MOM, I WANT FIVE HUNDRED OF THESE! AND SO DO MY FRIENDS! And she said, STOP YELLING!

And all was well.

What I’m trying to say is: my mom is a super talented sewer (sewer? seamstress? one-who-sews?) and has an adorable etsy shop full of hand made purses, clutches, and totes. She recently listed the cosmetic bags because I convinced her that everyone in all the land would want to buy them for their friends for Christmas.

So go check her out! And support Small Business Saturday while you’re at it! ;)

Note from my mom: Just to make “The Sweet Life” readers’ holiday shopping a little sweeter, I am offering free shipping! Please use coupon code “DEC2012″ at checkout. You’ll be helping Superstorm Sandy victims as well – I’m donating 10% of my sales to the American Red Cross. AND, don’t forget: if you don’t see a fabric or style that suits you, I do custom orders as well! Thank you and happy shopping!

Note from me: If someone doesn’t buy that seersucker clutch soon, I *promise* you I will.

My Essential Baking Tools {Vlog!}

You GUYS! You are so great. Thank you for all your funny/sweet/awesome comments! You totally inspired me to make another vlog, this time about my favesie baking tools.

Warning: I tried to edit (for about 40 seconds and then Mike turned on the election coverage and I got distracted) and I just couldn’t figure it out. So there is a totally annoying moment towards the end - I call myself out on it so it’s hard to miss - that I couldn’t get rid of. I also realize I’ve already told you that Mike passed the bar BUT he just found out he passed NY as well as MA (overachiever) and this is big life news so obvi I can’t stop talking about it. Please forgive me. Finally, according to my vlogs, I only wear stripes. Which is 90% true.

Here it is: my must-have baking tools!

That “other shape spatula that I’m talking about”.

Pastry cutter = dough blender = pastry blender. Potayto Potahto Poteeto.

My First Vlog (!!!)

(vlog = video blog. Mom.)

…otherwise known as the time I rambled about Trader Joe’s for ten minutes.

YOU GUYS! Vlogging is fun! I decided not to edit the video because I think the best parts are when I am awkward/confused/lost. Also I totally have an annoying teenager voice for the first half and then somewhere around “Super Nutty Toffee Clusters” I switch to my teacher voice. And I say “amazing” and “um” and “like” and “I” and “me” way too much.

“This is ME. Welcome to my life.”

I LOVE FALL: Vermont Edition

Apparently this year I made it my goal to experience fall in as much of New England as possible. Last weekend Mike and I headed up to Stowe, VT with our friends Liz and Dave for some autumn fun; we spent Saturday poking around Burlington (hello, Ithaca NY on crack!), where we stumbled upon the BEST farmer’s market (complete with thousands of samples, a pumpkin sweet potato fritter, hippie children dancing, and a morbidly obese bulldog being pulled around in a wagon) and hit up the Magic Hat Brewery. On Sunday we explored the uber-creepy Smuggler’s notch, then went to Cabot (FREE CHEESE), a perfectly Vermont cider mill (pictured above), and Ben and Jerry’s! A trip full of foliage and eating, just how I like it :)

(Sorry, Liz, about that spot of sunshine you are birthing)

{photo credit to Liz!}

If you can figure out what’s going on in this picture I’ll give you a prize.

I LOVE FALL: New Hampshire Edition

Have I ever mentioned that I love taking pictures of foliage/pumpkins/gourds/leaves/trees/sunrises/fall things? Ever? No?

Well then YOU’RE in for a surprise!

Last weekend I got to tag along on Mike’s firm’s fall outing in Meredith, NH. We had the cutest room with the cutest little balcony for watching the sunrise over the lake, found a lunch place with deeeelicious butternut squash-apple-bacon bisque, and spent Saturday afternoon driving around looking for all the best fall photo ops (covered bridge and pumpkin farm included). We also managed to snag some cider donuts straight from the fryer and make friends with a giant pig named Munchkin. All in all another perfect fall weekend!

*Guest Post* Fall Food Lovin’ by Emily

Today’s post (and awesome photos) come from my sister Emily, who was recently home from college on fall break and on a mission to eat and photograph every fall food imaginable (we MUST be related ;) ). Take it away, Emily!

Fall Break means a few things. It means family time, it means Reese’s peanut butter cup pumpkins (and lots of ‘em!), it means being cozy on the couch while stuffing my face with hand-fulls of candy corn, and it means ALL THINGS pumpkin and squash. Here’s a little glimpse into what I did (but mostly ate) over my time home from college this past week: homemade Pumpkin and Candy Corn Rice Krispies Treats, homemade Pumpkin-Maple-Cranberry Granola, pumpkin donuts and homemade Butternut Squash Pizza, Pumpkin 7-layer Bars* (homemade and way too delicious to not exist all year round), a trip to Cooperstown with lots of apples, Pumpkin soup (again, homemade-thanks mom!) with soft garlic bread, homemade Butternut Squash and Apple Muffins, walks around the neighborhood to take in the beautiful fall views, and pumpkin soft serve with chocolate sprinkles! But most importantly, is the Fall Trail Mix that I concocted, which is really just a mash of snack-y foods with a fall twist. Enjoy!

*Note: these are pictured TWICE because they are just. THAT. DELICIOUS.

Ingredients:

  • Chex
  • Pretzel nuggets
  • Chocolate chips
  • Candy corn (I used regular, Indian, Blackberry Cobbler, and Tangerine flavors)
  • Chocolate-covered Cookie Dough Pieces (or chocolate-covered anything!)
  • Raisins
  • Peanuts
  • Almonds
  • Cashews

Mix together in a large bowl and EAT!
